An earthquake, 8.0 richter (revised from 7.8), rocked Asia on May 12. Tremors reached as far as Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei, Bangkok (Thailand) and Hanoi (Vietnam).
Death toll: 69,122
Missing: 17,991
